Will you see my child for individual therapy?

Children, adolescents, and teenagers are seen individually on a case by case basis. Please note a Parent Session is required before I see any minor individually - this allows me to gather information for a comprehensive assessment to determine therapeutic needs and goals and collaborate with parents in co-creating a treatment plan moving forward. I approach child and adolescent mental health from a family systems perspective, which involves working with the family system and varying degrees of parental involvement in therapy services.

When working with minors (all young persons under the age of 18), parental consent is mandatory from the child's custodial parent(s). Documentation of custody agreements/guardianship is necessary for youth whose parents are separated or divorced and one parent has sole custody.

What therapeutic approaches do you use?

I employ various therapeutic approaches including Attachment-Based Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Somatic Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy as clinically indicated when working with individual adults. My practice is rooted in trauma-informed, family systems, attachment, and strengths-based approaches and I work from the understanding that healing occurs in relationship.

I am also a Registered Circle of Security Parenting Facilitator and enjoy weaving in attachment-based parenting approaches in my work with parents and families.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

The cancellation policy at co.lab counselling is 24 hours notice. If for any reason you are unable to attend your scheduled session, please allow at least 24 hours notice to cancel or reschedule your session or you will be billed a late cancellation fee. No shows are charged the full session rate.

What is family therapy?

Co.lab Counselling offers a safe, supportive, and therapeutic space to address challenges; gain insight into emotions, behaviours, and patterns within the family system; communicate attachment needs; and deepen connection between family members. Our intervention begins with a comprehensive assessment of your family system - parenting experiences, dynamics, culture, strengths, and areas for growth. We collaborate to establish clear goals for therapy and co-create a treatment plan. Family therapy may include varying arrangements of the family system (individual, parent-only, and the full family system) depending on clinical judgment and the needs of the family. Regardless of the arrangement, the family remains at the core of therapeutic work.

What is Circle of Security?

Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) is an 8-week program based on decades of research on attachment. This program supports parents in identifying the needs of their child (independence versus emotional support) and maintaining the stance as a parent of being bigger, stronger, wiser, and kind. The goal of the program is being able to meet this needs to increase security in our children, as well as within ourselves as parents. This program is applicable to caregivers with infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, and teenagers. More information is located in the links below developed by Circle of Security International:
